According to data from Pitchbook, venture capital firms (VCs) invested a total of $8.86 billion into 768 U.S. companies in August. These numbers are down 19.3% from the $10.97 billion invested by VCs in August 2017 but are up 4.70% from the total invested capital in July 2018. For 2018 year-to-date, $74.26 billion has been invested by venture capital firms across 7,696 deals. This represents an increase of 28.7% from the $57.69 billion of capital invested during the year-to-date period in 2017 (9,982 deals). Fewer deals have been completed this year than last but with greater investment size per deal. This year, there has been an average investment size of $9.65 million, which is up 67.0% from the average investment size of $5.78 million in 2017.
Information technology (IT) firms saw the greatest number of deals and capital invested at 342 and $4.22 billion, respectively, in August. Year-to-date, 3,474 deals for $33.84 billion capital invested have been completed in the IT sector, constituting 45.6% of all capital and the most out of all industries. Healthcare companies received $2.11 billion of VC investments and business-to-consumer companies received $1.35 billion of VC investments. Comments are closed.
